hmmm. had quite a saturday. did lots of stuff!
went out with mer to do some 'shopping'. hahaha. entered this fantastic art materials shop in ps.. gosh!! so many things that caught my eye. we stayed in there for the longest time! luckily, i managed to curb my spending. proud of it :D:D almost broke quite a few things. klutz i am. and i don't like how the shopping fanatic comes out whenever i go out. argh!!
stopped shopping within 2 hours cos mer got tired :| hahaha. so we went home and i finally got my lazy self down to take a jog. tried resuming intervals again, but i'm so unfit, goodness! i'd better start exercising regularly. :(
and now, i'm finishing up my philo paper! 3 more questions! (thanks ah mer. u just came to hug me and to take a look at the passage i was reading. and u left in disgust on reading the first word - liberty. :|)
ah, this is just so interesting!:
Unfortunately for the good sense of mankind, the fact of their fallibility is far from carrying the weight in their practical judgment, which is always allowed to it in theory; for while every one well knows himself to be fallible, few think it necessary to take any precautions against their own fallibility, or admit the supposition that any opinion of which they feel very certain, may be one of the examples of the error to which they acknowledge themselves to be liable.
Absolute princes, or others who are accustomed to unlimited deference, usually feel this complete confidence in their own opinions on nearly all subjects. People more happily situated, who sometimes hear their opinions disputed, and are not wholly unused to be set right when they are wrong, place the same unbounded reliance only on such of their opinions as are shared by all who surround them, or to whom they habitually defer: for in proportion to a man's want of confidence in his own solitary judgment, does he usually repose, with implicit trust, on the infallibility of "the world" in general. And the world, to each individual, means the part of it with which he comes in contact; his party, his sect, his church, his class of society: the man may be called, by comparison, almost liberal and largeminded to whom it means anything so comprehensive as his own country or his own age.

omg. philosophy is getting more and more intriguing to me. i can't help it!
Passage 12, from John Barrow, Pi in the Sky, p. 268:
"There is one curious example of the effectiveness of mathematics that weighs heavily upon the side of those who would convince us that mathematics is discovered and existed before there were any such creatures as mathematicians.
"When modern astronomers observe the structure of the distant Universe of stars and galaxies they are not determining the nature of the Universe’s structure ‘now’. They are seeing distant objects as they were far in our past. In fact, in many cases we are seeing them long before any form of life existed on Earth…The fact that the mathematical structure of the object being observed coincides with that given by our mathematical analysis on Earth here and now witnesses to the fact that there is an intrinsic mathematical aspect to these objects that is observer independent . . .This gives us confidence in the existence of some universal substructure that is mathematical in nature."
this is so.. Einstein's universe and Quantum Weirdness. i'm going to the national library to look for these books once the holidays come. gosh! so exciting!!!

random thoughts in the head of jnh
how does one determine what is beautiful or ugly, good or bad, formal or casual? surely it can't just be something which is passed down from generation to generation.. it is quite ridiculous to think that is merely a social issue. i wonder what was wired in our heads from the moment we were born. for there have been studies that show that even babies can differentiate what is beautiful from what is not.
a thought provoking passage from a philo practice paper that i'm currently doing. these things are like.. my life for the past few days.
Passage 22, from Douglas Rushkoff, Coercion:
"My purpose is to help us get free of coercion, not simply live in reaction to it – especially if that reaction is to succumb to a constant state of suspicion. It wouldn't be a fun way to go through life. Believe me – researching and writing this book has brought me there more than once. Besides, suspicious people are some of the most easily manipulated. Ironically, perhaps, the more fun you're having in life, the more satisfied you are with yourself, the harder a target you are to reach.
"The fact is, everything is coercive. Even something as minute as the way I put the word "everything" in italics is meant to influence you. There's nothing wrong with attempting to sway others to our own way of thinking, especially if we truly believe we are right. It's how relationships, families, businesses, and societies improve themselves. If someone has a better idea for how to dig a hole, elect a leader, or raise happy children, it's up to that person to convince us why he's right."
interesting. though he contradicts himself.

hahaha. :D
realised how important reconciliation and forgiveness really is. yesterday night, mer 'blessed' teddy by proclaiming that henceforth, he was no longer going to be labelled as 'the freaky bear'. how happy teddy was! and he really, really didn't want to be freaky anymore after that. really amazing. happy! good move on mer's part.
happy day! a very fruitful one. :D hahaha. went to sch for our last badminton session of the semester.. aww :(( come next sem, it's going to be quite unlikely that all of us will able to meet at any given time to play together like this. so.. until further notice, this marks the end of my weekly dosage of exercise with u science people :( but smile :) cos today's was quite a good session! had 4 singles matches in a row. hehehe. pretty fun :DDD
